fog shmog

I don't want to mitigate the story today that Pittsburgh's air is bad. But still, take a look at the ABC news report on this and what do you see? First the picture is of Three Rivers Stadium. and the picture they clearly chose to illustrate our smog problem was quite a foggy day. So again, its not meant to deny the issue at hand, but come on?

They have a lot of comments to that article. worth a read.

I'll just append this here... there is a lot of coal related news today. See this press release that says a lot about competition for coal workers these days. That and it looks like US Steel is going to give out some more details this evening on their planned investment at the Clairton Coke Works.

That looks like one of those ozone action days to me.

I know people are crying foul because the air is sampled out in Clairton but if you look at the amount of black diesel exhaust on the roads around here and then add that to the particulate pollution that results from the coal plants in Ohio, WV, and other parts west, its not surprise that we are one of the worst soot cities. There are things we can do to mitigate this - and the county is taking action with regards to diesel exhaust, but until we have clean coal, more nuclear, or more solar and wind power we're not going to see any substantial improvements in our air quality.

Also not to minimize the problem, but my first thought when I heard this story was that Pittsburgh might rank so high because it is one of the most measured cities for air pollution--going back to the steel days and today with CMU's federally funded monitoring projects--and hence one of the best reported cities. As the AP stated:

"The association's "State of the Air: 2008" report, being released Thursday, was based on air quality measurements reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by state and local agencies between 2004 and 2006. The study looks at three key pollution measures."

actually, its an interesting question. Can we figure out exactly when that picture was taken. Post PNC park, pre Heinz field, a steelers game in town that looks pretty packed... does that narrow it down enough??

small victories I suppose. We go from overcast to ill-lit. I will would like to know if we can figure out when exactly the original photo was taken. I will post it over the weekend maybe to see if we can get some crowdsourcing.

There's a Steelers game being played at Three Rivers Stadium, and PNC Park is almost finished, so that photo had to have been taken sometime during the 2000 NFL season.

The last Pirates game at Three Rivers Stadium was September 30, 2000. The last Steelers game at Three Rivers Stadium was December 16, 2000. Three Rivers Stadium was imploded on February 11, 2001. The first baseball game at PNC Park was March 31, 2001. The first football game at Heinz Field was August 25, 2001.

My bet is that that photo was taken during the last Steelers game at three Rivers Stadium (December 16, 2000). I remember the Steelers hosted the Washington Redskins, and the weather was inclement that day.
