Charlotte... Pittsburgh... recession..

So here is a quote in the media:

Think you’d rather ride out the recession in Charlotte than in Rust Belt cities such as Buffalo or Pittsburgh?

Think again.

Interesting because it was actually written in Charlotte last week.

As an PIT airport-centric guy, it's a bit ironic that USAir(ways) moved the core flights from Pittsburgh to Charlotte, and now Charlotte's in trouble.

I don't wish the town any difficulty - it's a nice place, good people - but maybe there's a certain airline karma going on.

I'm living in Charlotte at the moment and I can tell you it's not pretty. A half finished high-way and a half finished sky scraper leave the impression that someone pulled the carpet out from under Charlotte.

US Airways is stupid. They left PIT because they thought the overhead was too expensive, and they moved their primary hub to CLT. Since then, they've sunk billions of dollars into that airport just so they can have half the capacity they enjoyed at PIT. Does CLT even have a concrete runway? No disrespect to Charlotte, but good luck dealing with US Airways.

I wonder if the Pgh haters in places like Charlotte are rethinking their position now? It's hard for me to not have a "ha! take that!" attitude here, because of how maligned we've been in the past.

I know we are far from perfect ourselves, have much work to do, and wish no individual economic victims ill will. But, from a regional perspective, I'd like to see the nosesnubbers eat crow...
