the anti-hub

Just reading this Trib article today on airport metrics... it says the airport here is the 47th busiest. When the main airport of the 22nd largest region has the 47th busiest airport it says something. It ends with a paragraph quoting an expert predicting even more USAirways route cuts here.

We need a contest to figure out what to do with the barely used concourses out there. I say close one of them off and fill it with Roomba's.

addendum: there is also some more detailed discussion of US airline hubs today from the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation of all places. But worth a scan.

(1) Despite our size we have a lot of mature folks who fly only twice a year to and from Florida, Vegas or Arizona. I'm guessing fully 40 percent of the flights from PIT now go to one of those places.

(2) The OAG is a rough guide. Losing 4 commuter filghts to Franklin or Jamestown NY count the same as 4 737 flights to Phila. I prefer the flight capacity tracker over at USA Today, which shows us to be roughly equivalent with Kansas City and Indianapolis in seats available come Sept.

(3) US will cut Hartford, Raleigh, and St. Louis only if their losing money on them, no matter what the great expert Boyd says. Plus, they need to watch their back. Southwest has good size ops in St. Louis and Raleigh and might just replace those US flights as the economy rebounds.

Laser tag and paintball arenas are what we could use the spare concourses for.

How about a junkyard for all those extra clunkers lying around?

Because laser tag and paintball guns couldn't possibly slow down the security line for the people who just want to fly somewhere.
