I'm originally from Detroit, and it saddens me to see what they are going through. If nothing else, I hope what they learn from Pittsburgh's story is patience--it may take 20 years or more for people to be talking about Detroit's recovery from this period.
Also a bit worrisome for Detroit is that it has nothing in the city itself like Pittsburgh's universities, despite the suggestion to the contrary in that article. Its CMUs and Pitts are actually in towns like Ann Arbor and Lansing, not Detroit itself, and I don't know how that might affect Detroit's prospects going forward.
That said, one way or another, I expect a shrunken Detroit to eventually become a prosperous, and cool, city. It just may take a while.
