“What does Pittsburgh and Nigeria has in common?”

OK, this is THE (reverse) diasporan story of the day from Nigeria's The Nation: Nigeria can be among world’s top economy if…’.   Gotta love the paper's motto: 'Truth in Defense of Freedom'.

With the linguists in town, I am wondering about the semantics of 'diaspora'.  It is a unique Pittsburgh-centricism that has us thinking about this backwards you know.  Waiting to hear what the word of the year is btw.

How connected is everything?  Those Chester Engineer folks are pretty busy these days I bet.  Every other story is about a water break somewhere.

The semantic question taps into a conversation that I had with Jim Russell, Jim Morris, and Doug Heuck about four years ago (!) in connection with what became my "Pittsburgh Manifesto" post and the IntoPittsburgh LinkedIn group that Jim has run.

On one side: The Pittsburgh diaspora represents what modern Pittsburgh should focus on: attract human and financial capital from a base that consists of expats and their affiliates. The emotional connection to the old Pittsburgh will give live to the new Pittsburgh, or something like that.

On the other side: New Pittsburgh should focus on what we might call a "reverse diaspora": It doesn't matter where the human and financial capital come from; the point of the conversation is to make salient the extraordinary opportunity that Pittsburgh represents today - and that isn't tied to steel or to memories of what was here before. It's a break with the past, not a continuation of the past.

In practice, I think that Pittsburgh boosters have to sell a bit of the former in order to get in the proverbial door, and then sell a lot of the latter.
