9/11 from Space

Via the folks at and astronaut Frank Lee Culbertson Jr (CAPT, USN(Ret.)), who was the only American not on Earth at the time.

A decade or so earlier I worked at the World Financial Center next door to the WTC and would walk though the WTC underground plaza daily as part of my commute. The daytime worker count in the WTC was something on the order of 50 thousand. I remain in awe to this day of the miracle that so many got out.

Thank, in part, Leslie Robertson, the 34 year-old structural engineer who designed buildings with enough of a balance between efficiency and strength such that thousands had time to evacuate the Towers.
