Big Homes R Us

Bloomberg/Businessweek has a story: U.S. Zip Codes with the Biggest Houses with this line:
"Pittsburgh had the largest number of areas with big houses"
Of their top 25 zip code areas ranked by size of homes we have: Mars, Gibsonia, Sewickly, Wexford, and Fox Chapel.

update:  I'm told I missed Venetia, PA (15367) which is on that list at #4 as well...  so the zip with the 4th largest homes in the nation. That's kind of amazing. Venetia being Peters Township, McMurray and environs give or take. Interesting also because Peters Township is itself in the news of late.  Makes me wonder if the Marcellus folks are going to threaten to boycott Peters Twp the same way they threatened the city of Pittsburgh.  I'm sure none of the industry apparachiki live in Peters Township right?

I noticed that Upper Saint Clair would have made the list except they didn't want two neighborhoods from the same city. Weird. guess they were going by mailing address?

Clearly, since Wexford does not exist other than as a mailing address.

Sewickly must exist. I think I had coffee there once.

This reaffirms what I'd been thinking all along, that Pittsburgh's northern suburbs are becoming a cluster of wealth.

Whats funny is that a large % of these McMansions are owned by empty nesters. When asked why they need such a large home, they say they need room for all the kids and grandkiddos to stay when they come home for the holidays.

But what they really want is an impressive address to live in. Many homes aren't even fully furnished and have ten to fifteen yr old cars in the garages.

I've noticed that also. Of course, if you don't have to make it to Oakland every day, you may as well move out somewhere with space.
