Shale Shrugged

AP is running a look at the history of fracking and all of that: Decades of federal dollars helped fuel gas boom

But what I think the story misses, and pointed out here in the past, is the long history of Federal research into that which is known as fracturing including the attempts to use atomic detonations to tease the natural gas from the shale.  Read up on:

Here's an article from the LA Times (reprinted in the Youngstown Vindicator)about urban drilling in California. Greasing the Wheels

In the Vindy paper version they had a pic of a California drilling rig,,,,done only as Cali people can. The entire 175' tall rig is covered with panels of plywood that are painted in a psychedelic pattern surrounded by skyscrapers. Looks like a castle from Alice in Wonderland.

And about a month ago I saw a report ( I think on CNN) that oil companies were starting to drill along the coastline. They are not permitted to drill off shore so they set up the drilling platforms about six blocks from the shoreline and then drill out 2.5 miles under the sea to get to the oil.
