I liked the second link. Aside from the smoke, the lack of trees was what stood out for me. That and the attribution of "Hell with the lid off" to Mark Twain.

I assume you mean that the attribution was wrong? Because it was not Twain who called "Pittsburg" "hell with the lid taken off" but James Parton, in The Atlantic Monthly, January 1868: http://www.pittsburghinwords.org/james_parton.html

The way certain people seem to attract quotations like a swifter attracts dust has always amused me ever since I was once in a talk and watched as a very senior professor corrected a very junior one by noting “Churchill didn’t say everything.”
