Problem with this using this figure for year-by-year comparison is that each year's line is dependent on a single team - the next best or worst team in the division/league/overall that season. So this year's line is dependent most of the year on either the Cards or the Red Sox, depending on if these are division, league or overall games back.
Winning percentage would be dependent on a larger sample - all the team's in that year, and might more accurately reflect the Pirates relative performance.
lots of issues comparing over 20+ years, whether it be winning percentage or not. Different divisions, wild card.... interleague play.
